Medical unexplained symptoms are mysterious conditions where physical symptoms are not attributable to known medical conditions. Symptoms can arise from any part of the body, and can cause much suffering, yet all physical test results are within normal limits.

Nevertheless the patient insists on more investigations, and seeks second, or more opinions, all to no avail. Over time these individuals are labelled hypochondriacs, attention seekers, and subjected to ridicule. Family members are angry and fed up, and patients feel misunderstood and frustrated.

These conditions often lead to general health anxiety; excessive preoccupation with physical symptoms, difficult encounters with the health care system; disproportionate disability; displays of strong, often negative emotions toward doctors and clinic staff; unrealistic expectations; and noncompliance with treatment efforts.

How do we explain such phenomena? See what can be done for such individuals who are difficult to treat.

Come and hear Dr Lim’s views on these conditions.
