Chaplaincy is distinct from mainstream pastoral models because the focus is delivering a “ministry of presence” to people outside of a church. While local-church models typically reinforce a wagon-wheel approach, where the pastor remains at the centre and the outside community follows the spokes inward, chaplains invert the wagon-wheel model by providing their presence where people live and work along the outer wheel rim.

This session is an conversational workshop and Introduction to the ways Waverley Abbey trains pastoral care workers and chaplains, it will refer to Waverley Abbey Framework and will mention some practical examples.

The Waverley Abbey Integrative Framework is a relational approach that emphasises the importance of the relationship and adherence to the core conditions of:

  • genuineness

  • unconditional acceptance

  • empathy

It reflects on all core aspects of human functioning, namely:

  • relational

  • physical

  • emotional

  • volitional

  • rational

  • spiritual

Considering the core needs each person has for security, self-worth and significance, the WIF approach has a Christian world-view at its foundation. It is underpinned by Christian anthropology that understands humans as created in the image of God and thus relational at the core of their being, and intrinsically valuable.

Workshop related to about Wellbeing that is concerned with far more than the absence of ill health (World Health Organization 1946). To have individual or communal health is only a part of what wellbeing is. Wellbeing necessitates: a holistic approach to health having individual and shared meaning and purpose positive relationships in life communities which promote engagement and enablement access to nature and attention to environmental issues security: basic human needs, stable employment, sufficient finances and personal safety.

1.      Discussing the relationship between living well as an individual and living well in community.

2.      ‘Five ways to wellbeing’ work to illustrate the focus of personal wellbeing and its primary weakness: ‘Five ways to wellbeing’ work… aimed to provide people with a basic guide to personal wellbeing: connect, be active, take notice, keep learning and give. While these activities are strongly correlated with personal wellbeing, they take no account of the structural factors at play that allow people to live a good life.

3.      Living well together, in the Aristotelian tradition, has shared human flourishing as its goal. ‘To flourish is understood as having a purpose in life, participating in society, having a community around oneself.’ Corporate flourishing is thus both spiritually informed and values driven. In order to enhance personal flourishing, individuals also need to seek the good of the community they inhabit. In short, wellbeing is to have a good life, lived well in community.”
