The subject of the Rapture has been controversial throughout the Church Age. Even now many theologians and pastors are divided over the topic. It need not be.
In this talk Wan will trace the subject from the early Church till the present. He will review the doctrine from the early historical setting - what some prominent early Church fathers taught, the change in approach of later Christians such as Augustine during the Roman Church period; the Reformation, and the subsequent development of Church doctrine in the nineteenth century till the present. Needless to say there has been huge disinformation on the subject, and total confusion and ignorance about the "Blessed Hope" which is the Rapture (not the Second Coming as pushed by George Eldon Ladd, a covenant theologian).
This subject is very much linked to the doctrine of "Eschatology": teachings on the end times. Many churches are afraid to deal with the subject because the study of "Eschatology" requires an extensive knowledge of the Bible from the Old Testament to the New Testament. It requires a knowledge of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. It also requires a careful exegetical treatment of God's relationship with Mankind throughout the different ages. This approach is called "Dispensationalism" in contrast with the "Covenant" theology taught in many seminaries.
Finally, the most important method in understanding the subject must not be based on what Church Fathers taught, or what position your favourite teacher or pastor advocates. It must be based on the Bible considering God's relationship with Israel vs. the Church. The "Imminency" of Christ's return is key to your understanding.
Are you expecting Jesus Christ or the Antichrist as the next important event in eschatology? Who will be left to populate the earth if all believers are raptured at Christ's Second coming?
