The mention of investing conjures many adverse images in the minds of some Christians – wild risks, greed, chance, gambling. So much that some Christians avoid the subject entirely.
Scripture commends us to be wise in our use of wealth. Being wise with our finances involves putting our money to work. That is investing.
Investing is in fact an integral part of modern financial planning. The returns enable us to meet our lifetime financial needs. It enables us to bless our families, church and society. It frees us to pursue meaningful endeavours – serving God, spending time with our family, and engaging with social concerns. Through our financial contributions, we are able to play our part in fulfilling our calling as salt and light of the world.
Like many other skills in life, investing is a set of skills to be learned. Building on the firm foundation of Scripture, we will present a practical Christian approach to investing, and explicate the key concepts underlying the approaches adopted by professional investors.
About the Speaker
Hobart is the author of The Financial Machine. He possesses professional certification in financial planning, and has over 10 years of private investing experience. In his book, he offers a unique approach to personal finance by integrating its various disciplines, and presents it from a Christian perspective. He has spoken on the topic of financial stewardship in several church settings.
He is a member of Ang Mo Kio Methodist Church. Prior to his marriage to his wife Eunice, he served as a church council member in his previous church. To further his understanding of Scripture, he took classes in a seminary as an audit student.
Hobart was deeply impacted by stories of the financial hardships faced by his parents in their growing years. He believes that sound financial education is an important foundation to living life to the full, and that positive change can be brought about through equipping the Body of Christ in the area of financial stewardship.
