In more recent days, the topic of “prophets” and “prophecy” has been hotly debated in the Church, especially following the flurry of prophetic words directed to the coronavirus pandemic and US elections.
When prophecy fails to bring about all it promises, it leaves those holding onto it confused and asking, “Why did the prophet get it wrong?” In reality, all any of us can do at that stage is to speculate.
For the followers of prophets who have failed in their predictions, the fallout is real and has led to division, embarrassment, hurt, and disillusionment. To add to this, sceptics of modern prophecy use these occasions to ridicule and mock and to further divide believers.
Although the issue of failed prophecy—whether spoken to individuals or to nations—is seldom ‘black and white,’ the Bible has much to say about it. It sheds much insight into the dynamic nature of prophecy and the reasons for why it may fail.
Understanding these brings clarity, and offers important lessons for how we are to respond to prophetic claims, and how we are to view prophecy in general and the role it is to play in our lives.
Topics covered, include:
The Dynamic Nature of Prophecy
Prophecy and Evaluation
Eight Reasons Why Prophecy Can Fail
The Importance of Accountability in the Prophetic
Perspectives on Prophecy
Lessons in Prophecy for the Church
