By now the dust has settled on the American election, and the smoke has cleared. America has a new President, Donald Trump, who defied all the odds: opposition from the establishment, the media, some “evangelical” Christian leaders, and even his own Republican party. Trump's motto is: "Make America Great Again" That slogan assumes America has fallen from its greatness. Is that true? If so will America be great again?
We must ask another question. What made America great in the first place?” We need to trace America's history, and her heritage from a Biblical perspective. America's rise to sole world superpower status in the late 20th century was not happenstance. God's hand of blessing was evident. From the time of America's discovery by Christopher Columbus in 1492 A.D Christian pilgrims made the hazardous journey across the ocean to the "brave new world" to flee oppression from state-controlled churches in Europe to worship God according to their conscience and the Bible. American culture was underpinned by the Bible in its inception.
From the American Revolution (1765-1783), to the American Civil War nearly one hundred years later (1861-1865), to World War I (1914-1918), World War II (1939-1945), and the Cold War (1946-1991) America is undergoing another kind of war, more deadly and insidious, a war against her Christian roots. Much like Frank Peretti"s novel "This Present Darkness"” about a city's desperate struggle as spiritual darkness descends and envelops the city, America stands at a crossroad: Will America become great again; or has America crossed the point of no return?
