"Did Jesus promise the Church a kingdom? Or was it promised to Israel?
In Matthew 5 & Luke 11 Jesus taught His Jewish disciples what we often refer to as The Lord’s Prayer. One important aspect in this prayer is to pray for God’s (Father’s) kingdom to come (to earth). The prayer was part of Jesus’s teaching in The Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5 – 7. This has been understood as a model for our prayer: adoration; acknowledging God’s will; presenting our petitions; finally ascribing praise and requesting His protection from evil.
What is missing is perhaps the most important aspect of this prayer: petitioning God to bring His Kingdom, which is in Heaven, to earth.
Wan will especially emphasise the “Thy Kingdom come…” aspect often overlooked by the Church. We have allegorised and spiritualised this to mean the inner state (will) of the believer that is conformed to God's will. Did Jesus teach us to pray for a literal coming of His Kingdom? While not dismissing the spiritual aspect of the "Lord's Prayer" he will peel away the layers of misunderstanding accreted over the centuries, where the most important aspect has been overlooked.
The Lord taught us to pray for God's Kingdom to come down to earth literally. This has immense repercussion on the believer's life.
